Hal “Buzz” Coons III, CPA with Pearce Bevill Leesburg Moore PC of Birmingham, has been elected as the newest officer of the executive committee of the National CPA Health Care Advisors Association, a nationwide network of more than 55 CPA firms serving the healthcare industry.

Russell Thompson Butler & Houston LLP, in Mobile, has promoted Amy deGruy, CPA and Katherine McKenzie, CPA to supervisor and Shelly Mitchell, CPA to senior accountant. In addition, Wallace McKinney, CPA has joined the firm as a staff accountant specializing in financial auditing.


Deborah Barnhart, CEO of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, was recently named to the Alabama Spaceport Authority Advisory Task Force by Gov. Robert Bentley. Barnhart is a Huntsville native and graduate of the University of Alabama in Huntsville.


Roger Pangle has been named the new president and CEO of Alabama Farmers Cooperative Inc. Pangle replaces Tommy Paulk, who retired July 31, after 17 years in that position. Pangle began his career with AFC in 1976, and most recently served as executive vice president and chief operational officer.


Design firm KPS Group Inc., of Birmingham, has hired Larry Kalousek, AIA, as vice president and director of aviation design. Kalousek has 25 years of experience, including public and military aviation facilities and systems.

Nina Rusert


Nina Rusert has joined Southern States Bank as vice president and manager of mortgage lending of the Birmingham office. Rusert has 23 years experience.

Ricky Smith has joined the board of directors for United Bancorporation of Alabama Inc. for United Bank. Smith is president and CEO of Smith Tractor Supply Co. Inc., with locations in Jay, Fla. and Frisco City and Atmore, Ala.


Kimberly Boyle, an assistant professor in the University of Alabama College of Human Environmental Sciences, has been chosen as a member of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Forty for the Future inaugural class.


J. Ryan Turner has joined Premier Medical Eye Group. A graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, Turner will practice at Premier’s new clinic location at Infirmary Eastern Shore in Baldwin County and in the Fairhope office.

HealthSouth has promoted Barb Jacobsmeyer to president of the central region, following the retirement of Terry Maxhimer, who had served the company for more than 19 years. Jacobsmeyer previously served as chief executive officer of The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis, a partnership of BJC Healthcare and HealthSouth, and regional vice president for HealthSouth’s central region.

Lawrence Medical Center, in Moulton, has hired Alan Billsby, D.O., to join its surgical staff. Billsby is a board-certified general surgeon with more than 20 years of experience.


Sight Savers America President and CEO Jeff Haddox has received the 2012 American Optometric Association’s Distinguished Service Award. The annual award was presented to Sight Savers America through provision of low vision devices.

Real Estate

The Dobbins Group LLC, of Birmingham, has named Steve Chester as COO. Chester has more than 20 years of experience in the banking and commercial real estate industries.
