John Besh steps down from company after wave of sex allegations

Chef John Besh is stepping down from his restaurant group in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against him and his company. Besh's departure from Besh Restaurant Group, which he co-owns, was announced in an email to staff on Monday. In an eight-month investigation, 25 current and former Besh Group employees told NOLA.com they were victims of sexual harassment while working at BRG or at a number of its restaurants. – AL.com

UA, ALDOT partner on self-driving infrastructure

Advanced technology used to make traveling safer and more efficient is the focus of a new project led by the University of Alabama and the Alabama Department of Transportation. Tuscaloosa is the first city in Alabama to install the technology that will collect data for research used to decrease travel time, reduce vehicle crashes and lay the groundwork for future self-driving vehicles. – News release

Governor presents $2.3M check at Wallace State groundbreaking

Wallace State Community College, the City of Oneonta and Blount County broke ground for a new 20,000 foot Wallace State-Oneonta facility last week. Oneonta Mayor Ross Norris welcomed Governor Kay Ivey to the event, during which she presented a grant for $2.3 million for the project. “By 2020, 62 percent of all the jobs in Alabama will require a postsecondary degree or certificate. Today, only 37 percent of our workforce have such a credential. Today, we celebrate a commitment to educate future generations…and I am especially proud to begin this project in rural Alabama,” Ivey said. – News release

HudsonAlpha researchers highlighted at ASHG annual meeting

Elective genomic sequencing, patient communication tools and genomic findings in autism spectrum disorder were highlights of the 2017 American Society of Human Genetics annual meeting last week. David Bick, MD, faculty investigator and clinical geneticist, presented a poster on Insight Genome, a program that offers clinical whole genome sequencing on an elective basis. – News release

Restaurant landscape in Alabama changing considerably

Romano's Macaroni Grill's owner Mac Acquisition filed for protection with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, citing some $23 million in secured debt with negative earnings of $12 million and on revenues of $230 million. Last week, publicly traded Ruby Tuesday was sold to Atlanta-based private equity company NRD Capital Management for $146 million, or $2.40 a share, according to the Wall Street Journal. At the stock's peak in 2004, Ruby Tuesday's was trading at $33 per share. – AL.com

Home prices up in September from a year ago for Mobile

The Mobile-area median residential sales price in September was $146,500, an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the median sales price from last September. The September median sales price increased 3 percent when compared to August. Historical data indicate the September median sales prices typically decreased 6.1 percent from the month of August from 2012 through 2016. – ANC

Adtran, Britain’s CCS partner for Metnet worldwide

British wireless pioneer CCS has partnered with U.S. power player Adtran to push its Metnet microwave backhaul solution to new customers worldwide. The alliance for CCS with the Alabama-based partner is now being pushed planet-wide for pre-5G and next generation deployments. Adtran has added Metnet to its Mosaic Open Network Alliance and portfolio for the deployment drive and signed a reseller deal with CCS. – Business Weekly
