Proposed overtime changes flagged before Congress

The Labor Department’s proposal to expand overtime would “suffocate” employee development and company growth, an Alabama gift shop owner told Congress Thursday at a hearing on how the proposal would affect small businesses. “We pay a very competitive salary and offer a generous benefits package for our type of retail business, which is why we have such an awesome team. However, the overtime rule ignores the fact that the cost of living in Hoover, Ala., is very different than in New York City,” said Terry Shea, co-owner of Wrapsody Inc., which has locations in Hoover and Auburn. – News release

Grants awarded to help lure new farmers

As the average age of the American farmer creeps closer to the retirement age, the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Thursday announced a series of grants to create programs to help new farmers and try to infuse new blood into a quickly aging field. Auburn University will receive a grant for $711,213 and Tuskegee University will get $459,914 for their efforts to develop training and provide other resources for farmers and ranchers with less than 10 years of experience. – AL.com

Listerhill TMC to close in December, 134 affected

Listerhill Total Maintenance Center will close in December, leaving 134 workers seeking jobs, officials said Wednesday. Mayor David Bradford said he was informed by email Wednesday morning the company, better known as TMC, located at Constellium Metals, will close its operation Dec. 6. – TimesDaily.com

Alabama man convicted in witness retaliation case

Federal prosecutors say an Alabama man has been convicted of retaliating against a witness in a health care fraud lawsuit. Authorities said Thursday that 64-year-old Jeffrey Alan Nursey was convicted of witness retaliation and faces up to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors say Nursey worked for a company that produced hearing aids and sent letters to a witness who cooperated with federal prosecutors in a health care fraud case that Nursey was involved with. – AP/TribTown
