Wallace State Community College’s Therapeutic Massage students have achieved 100 percent pass rate on the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork test.
Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange has re-implemented the Attorney General’s Safe Schools Initiative, with a new emphasis on encouraging technological advances to deal with the challenges experienced in today’s schools. The following are the eight recipients of the 2013 awards: Orange Beach Elementary in Orange Beach, Pleasant Home School in Andalusia, Redland Elementary School in Wetumpka, Homewood High School in Homewood, Blountsville Elementary School in Blount County, Eastwood Elementary School in Decatur, Leeds High School in Jefferson County, Challenger Middle School in Madison.
Brasfield & Gorrie, headquartered in Birmingham, has been recognized by the Subcontractors Association of Alabama and by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama for its leadership. SubAla named it General Contractor of the Year by a vote of its members, while ABC presented five Brasfield projects with first place awards of excellence.
Full Moon BBQ, based in Birmingham, has been presented the City of Birmingham Crystal award for the restaurant’s recent recognition by Huffington Post and Gayot.com as one of the Top 10 BBQ Restaurants in the nation. Full Moon garnered the honors for its chow-chow and zingy sauce.
Norfolk Southern’s Birmingham Regional Intermodal Facility’s administration building, in McCalla, has been certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the U.S. Green Building Council. Among the conservation items noted in the LEED certification were NS’ low-emission cranes and hostler tractors, and advanced gate and terminal automation technology, which will shorten the wait time for trucks entering the terminal.
Piedmont Middle School has received a $50,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation and the International Society for Technology in Education. Under the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program, teachers will receive two years of professional development to help them incorporate mobile technology into classroom learning with strategies that support teaching science, technology, engineering and math.
Out of the Blue creative services received the honors award in the Non-Profit Organization: Government Agencies and Offices category at the 27th International ARC Awards competition. The award was presented for the team’s creation of the Retirement Systems of Alabama’s 2012 annual report.
The University of South Alabama Mitchell College of Business has earned specialized accreditation for its Department of Accounting from the AACSB International. The accreditation is earned by less than 5 percent of the world’s business programs.
The Walbridge | Brasfield & Gorrie Joint Venture has won a 2013 merit award in the national Design-Build Institute of America awards program for the 150,000-square-foot main exchange replacement of the National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Brasfield & Gorrie and Walbridge teamed with CMH Architects to design and build the new facility.
Washington County Economic Development Initiative has received the Best of Class Small Division Award for its website, washingtoncountyedi.org, during the 2013 Southern Economic Development Council annual conference. The communication awards recognize leading marketing work done by economic development professionals throughout the South.
