White-Spunner Construction, of Mobile, provided design-build services for the Municipal Parking Garage in Bay St. Louis, Miss., which was recently recognized with a 2012 Award of Excellence from the International Parking Institute. The garage is a net zero energy project, creating as much power as its uses through solar panels and power backup. It also has an underground rainwater collection tank for irrigation and green screen panels that create a “living wall” where plants grow.
Alabama Power Co. has received an honorable mention from Site Selection magazine in its annual Top Utilities in Economic Development for 2011.
The Alabama Workforce Development Initiative has received the Registered Apprenticeship Innovator and Trailblazer award from the U.S. Department of Labor for the Go Build initiative expansion efforts. The Go Build initiative is a recruitment program aimed at enhancing the image of skilled craft trades and recruiting the next generation of skilled workers.

Vulcan Materials Co. announced that its Calera Quarry was recognized for outstanding safety achievement by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration. The Calera employees have worked since February 2006—more than 1.2 million work hours—without a lost time injury and more than 500,000 work hours without a medical case.
Calhoun Community College’s recent class of graduates from the physical therapy assistant program has achieved a 95 percent passage rate on its licensure exam. This marks the second consecutive year that graduates from the program have outscored their counterparts nationally.
