Mobile businesses hear how to win space work

Mobile's business community got a loud and clear message Thursday from deep space - or at least from Huntsville, which is the next best thing when it comes to getting a shot at NASA contracts. Dozens of interested business representatives gathered at a NASA Business Forum that offered a chance to hear from some people deeply involved in the business of space. – AL.com

House reveals tax plan with deep rate cuts

House Republicans unveiled a draft tax bill on Thursday, calling for deep cuts in both individual and corporate tax rates. "With this bill, we will grow our economy by delivering more jobs, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks to Americans of all walks of life," said Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. The rollout, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed to give bill drafters more time. – APR

Under Armour stock tank wounds Auburn’s portfolio

Auburn's 10-year apparel deal with Under Armour that included $10 million in UA shares has lost more than 75 percent of its value in only two years. At the time of the deal announced in Oct. 2015, Under Armour shares were trading for more than $100 a share. After another disastrous earnings report released on Oct. 31, Under Armour shares took another big tumble. Even factoring in Under Armour's stock split in April 2016, that's a significant loss of value for Auburn. – AL.com

America’s First Credit Union awards $90K to charities

America’s First Federal Credit Union awarded three charities a total of $90,800 this year. Each charity initially received $25,000 at the recent America’s First Golf Tournament and then was awarded additional monies to round out their figure to $30,266 per charity due to the efforts of the Community First campaign. – News release

SmartFinancial completes acquisition of Capstone Bank

The merger of SmartFinancial, Inc., parent company of SmartBank, and Capstone Bancshares Inc., parent company of Capstone Bank, was completed Wednesday, bringing SmartBank’s community banking model into several new markets in Alabama, including the Tuscaloosa area and Southwest Alabama stretching to the coastal region in Fairhope. – News release
