State’s woeful politics may cost it an auto plant

The good news: Alabama is reportedly one of the two finalists for the $1.6 billion Toyota-Mazda manufacturing plant, bringing 4,000 jobs, another big manufacturing presence, and perhaps a whole new crop of auto suppliers. The bad news: This milestone arrives at the same moment the state is embroiled in a nasty senatorial campaign that is drawing unflattering headlines after more than a year of the same, involving Roy Moore, Robert Bentley and Mike Hubbard. – AL.com

German auto parts company to add 300 good jobs

The German auto parts manufacturer BOCAR will build a new plant in North Alabama and hire 300 high-tech workers to supply parts for regional automobile manufacturers, officials announced today. Work on the plant will start in spring 2018 on a site adjacent to I-65 near I-565 in the part of Huntsville located in Limestone County. – AL.com

Newcomen Society honors Coca-Cola United

More than 500 people took part as the Newcomen Society of Alabama this week honored Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United, its chairman Claude Nielsen and president and CEO John Sherman, in Birmingham at the society's annual awards ceremony. Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in Birmingham. – AL.com

House approves new tax bill, Senate outlook uncertain

The House has narrowly approved a $1.4 trillion tax overhaul, clearing the first major hurdle in Republican attempts to cut taxes and rewrite the tax code. The vote was almost along party lines, with no Democrats voting in support of the bill and some GOP defections over provisions in the measure that would eliminate important tax deductions taken by constituents in some high tax states. – APR

AT&T expands Fixed Wireless Internet to rural areas

AT&T Fixed Wireless Internet is now available in rural and underserved locations in parts of 27 counties in Alabama. In June 2017, AT&T launched Fixed Wireless Internet, an innovative service that delivers an internet connection with download speeds of at least 10Mbps to homes and small businesses. – Business Insider
