SpaceX cleared for its first-ever human transport job

Private rocket company SpaceX is cleared for liftoff with its upcoming, first-ever, human transport mission. NASA approved a mission for SpaceX to take a crew to the International Space Station. The flight is set for late 2017 but preparations will begin soon. – WAAY

Effort to stop new 20/59 bridge having little success

Work has already begun on a three-phase project that will ultimately replace the Interstate 20/59 bridge that runs through the heart of downtown Birmingham. A countless number of people including city officials oppose the state's plans. "That highway was built in the 70's by the Bull Conner type people in this town to exclude blacks and cut them off from the rest of the prosperous part of Birmingham," attorney Bart Slawson said. – WVTM

Alabama’s jobless rate down to 5.9 percent

Alabama's unemployment rate is down slightly. The governor's office said Friday the state's seasonally adjusted jobless rate for October was 5.9 percent. That's down one-tenth of a point from 6 percent in September. Last month's rate is also below the jobless rate from a year ago by two-tenths of a percent. – WTVA

Efforts made to lure Hilton to Gulf State Park

Alabama officials are hoping to get a little help from a hospitality giant as they look to build a new Gulf State Park Lodge and meeting space on one of the state's most breathtaking beachfront properties. Organizers of the Gulf State Park Enhancement Project announced Friday they have applied for a partnership with Hilton Worldwide to develop a replacement for the old Gulf State Park Lodge, destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. – AL.com

Atlanta Braves’ new stadium now rock solid

American Builders 2017 last week celebrated a significant milestone on the Atlanta Braves’ SunTrust Park: the contractor has completed the new stadium’s structural concrete. “The structural concrete is the backbone of the ballpark—it’s what holds everything together and allows for the exhilarating fan experience the Braves are creating with the aesthetics of SunTrust Park’s design,” said American Builders 2017 Project Director Chris Britton. – News release
