Plastics company opens new facility in Athens

Asahi Kasei Plastics North America, Inc. has officially opened their newest plastics compounding facility in Athens with a ribbon cutting on Monday. This is the company's second facility in North America. They will make high performance plastic compounds for suppliers in automotive, industrial, furniture and trucking markets. – WAAY

CVG Alabama plants to lay off 120 workers

Workers at a Piedmont plant learned Monday that most will lose their jobs, beginning in June. About 120 of the 160-or-so full time workers will be let go throughout the summer, according to a CVG Global spokeswoman. Workers at the commercial truck seat manufacturer CVG Alabama, formerly Bostrom Seating, got the bad news Monday afternoon. – Anniston Star

Boeing-Shelby feud could cost jobs in Huntsville

Boeing is feuding with Alabama Senator Richard Shelby and the aerospace giant said it could cost jobs in Huntsville. Boeing wants a competitive playing field with Airbus and said Shelby is stalling that international process and the job loss could be just weeks away. Boeing said Airbus has three international lenders and they rely on one, the now-closed Ex-Im Bank. The company wants it re-opened. – WAFF

Alabama leads in drop of coal consumption for power

Alabama is among six states that have accounted for almost half of the decline in total coal consumption by the U.S. power sector, according to a new analysis by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Increased natural gas supply and a resulting price decline spurred increases in natural gas-fired power generation in several states. – News release

University of Montevallo breaks ground on Strong Hall

The University of Montevallo held a ceremonial groundbreaking for Strong Hall on April 27 to mark new construction and an expansion to the existing Mass Communication building on the university campus. This new facility will bring together the Communication Studies and Mass Communication faculty and students in the Department of Communication. – News release

Auburn/Opelika Marriott upgrade finishing up

The Auburn/Opelika Marriott at Grand National announced Thursday it is completing a multi-year comprehensive renovation of the hotel. Construction crews have been in overdrive transforming the hotel and conference center at Grand National just in time for the summer season and the return of The PGA TOUR's Barbasol Championship. – AL.com

Avadian Credit Union takes over American Bank of Huntsville

American Bank of Huntsville is officially under new ownership. Avadian Credit Union took over the bank on 3301 Memorial Parkway S.W., last week after entering an agreement to acquire the financial institution in August of last year. The not-for-profit financial cooperative did not disclose a purchase price. – AL.com

Alabama-based Hospice Partners buys Hospice of Virginia

With a new owner at its helm, a local hospice company will remain open. Alabama-based Hospice Partners of America has agreed to purchase Hospice of Virginia for $5.5 million from the Henrico County-based business’s parent company, American Hospice Management Holdings. – Richmond.com
