Storms deal blow to poultry farmers

Poultry farmers in several counties, including Limestone, Cullman and Franklin, are cleaning up after this week’s storms damaged or destroyed barns. John McMillan, state agriculture commissioner, said about 1.2 million chickens had been impacted: either killed by the storms or moved out of harm’s way. – Decatur Daily

According to a new report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Gulf of Mexico seafood industry in 2012 generated $461 million in sales impact in Alabama; $1.9 billion in Louisiana; $377 million in Mississippi; and a staggering $17 billion in Florida. – NOAA

Energen Corp. stock gets late-week boost

Back-to-School Tax Holiday Aug. 1-3

Alabama’s ninth annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday will be held Friday, Aug. 1, through Sunday, Aug. 3, according to State Revenue Commissioner Julie P.
