Watts says fans must support football program

Ray Watts made it clear during his Monday press conference: If fans want a football program, they'll have to pay for it. The UAB president said he reversed course from a December decision to disband football, bowling and rifle because of unprecedented fan support. Outside sources, including the Birmingham City Council and UAB Football Foundation, committed $17.2 million to reinstate football, and that led Watts to announce the school was "taking steps" to reinstate the program. – AL.com

Lab says listeria found in Alabama ice cream

Blue Bell Creameries is reviewing a report from a private laboratory that found evidence of listeria in a carton of ice cream manufactured at its Alabama plant. Brent McRae, 75, of Florida, who had recently eaten Blue Bell's Cookies `n Cream ice cream, fell ill with meningitis in April, said his lawyer Bill Marler of Seattle. KSHB

BP exec acquitted of charges that he lied to FBI

David Rainey, the highest ranking executive from BP charged in the Deepwater Horizon disaster, was acquitted Friday by a New Orleans jury of charges that he made false statements to the FBI. Jones Walker LLP and co-counsel Steptoe & Johnson LLP represented Rainey. The acquittal followed Monday’s dismissal of an obstruction of Congress charge against Rainey by the judge. BusinessWire

Ship to be christened the Gabrielle Giffords

Saturday on the Mobile River, an Austal-built warship will formally become the Gabrielle Giffords, in a ceremony that will affirm the identity of both the LCS 10 and its namesake. Last chance to file your BP oil spill claim

With a midnight Monday deadline approaching to file claims under a 2012 settlement over the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the claims administrator said he expected a last-minute rush of filers. "There's always a rush, for myriad reasons," Patrick Juneau said in a telephone interview last week. Juneau said more than 328,000 claims had been filed as of the middle of last week. More than 20,000 of those were filed last month. – AP/Times-Standard
