Spotlight on Mobile County

University of South Alabama Health System  
The USA Health System consists of the University of South Alabama Medical Center, USA Physicians Group, USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital and the Mitchell Cancer Institute. It is the region’s only academic medical center and has a three-part mission of teaching, research and service/health care.

USA Medical Center, an acute-care facility, has 406 licensed beds and serves the Gulf Coast as the region’s only Level I trauma center, offering specialized care via its centers for burn care, stroke, cardiovascular disease and sickle cell disease. It also is a teaching and research facility for the USA College of Medicine. It also offers outpatient services, working in concert with USA’s adjacent Mastin Clinics.

USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is one of less than 10 freestanding hospitals in the nation specifically serving children and women. With 2,800 deliveries annually, USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is Mobile’s leader in births. The hospital also offers many unique medical services, including the area’s only neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, specially equipped and staffed to provide the most advanced care for premature, critically ill and critically injured children.

The Children’s & Women’s Hospital is in the midst of a 195,000-square-foot, $72 million expansion that will nearly double the hospital’s size and enable more services. The expansion includes new operating rooms and a three-story tower dedicated to pediatric care. It is set to open later this year. It also offers robotic surgery and a state-of-the-art imaging center.

USA Health System also is home to the Mitchell Cancer Institute, opened in 2000 to increase Gulf Coast cancer survival rates through advanced treatment and research. The first academic cancer research institute in the upper Gulf Coast region, Mitchell is the largest single research endeavor in the history of the university.

Infirmary Health Inc.
Infirmary Health Inc. serves an 11-county region along the Gulf Coast. The system includes three acute care hospitals, three post acute care facilities, three outpatient facilities and more than 30 medical clinics.

In Mobile County, Infirmary Health Inc. operates its flagship hospital, Mobile Infirmary, with 704 licensed beds, plus J.L. Bedsole/Rotary Rehabilitation Hospital, Infirmary 65, E.A. Roberts Alzheimer’s Center, Infirmary Long Term Acute Care Hospital and Infirmary Medical Clinics.

Mobile Infirmary is the largest not-for-profit hospital in Alabama, with more than 2,500 employees. It is accredited and renowned for its cardiovascular programs, among others, and it works in partnership with the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.

Infirmary Health implemented a tobacco-free policy for all its facilities, and started a wellness program that includes a range of activities and initiatives designed to support the overall health and personal development of its team members and their families. The hospital system also partnered with the Mobile County Commission to offer a comprehensive primary care and health and wellness program to Mobile County employees and their families.

Infirmary Health is building a multi-story health care clinic in Saraland in north Mobile County that is part of the hospital system’s 10-year plan in the city that will eventually result in a hospital being built there, says Dr. Howard Rubenstein, mayor of Saraland.

Providence Hospital, sponsored by Ascension Health, recently has been accredited by the Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, one of only six such centers in the state.

Providence Hospital
Providence is a full-service, 349-bed medical/surgical facility. It is sponsored by Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic and largest nonprofit health care system. It admits more than 14,000 inpatients annually, and outpatient/emergency room registrations number more than 160,000 yearly. Specialized services include open-heart surgery, obstetrics, a freestanding wellness/rehab center and an outpatient center, cancer services and more.

The hospital recently announced a new mobile “app” for iPhones and Android smartphones, which allows users to connect with physicians who use the hospital, and provides information on its services and facilities, along with its Facebook page.

In 2012, Providence introduced robotic surgical technology, offering a minimally-invasive option to open surgery and laparoscopic procedures, the daVinci Surgical System.

Providence Hospital is a Certified Member of MD Anderson Cancer Network ™, a program of the University of Texas MD Anderson Center, the No. 1 cancer hospital according to US News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” survey.

The Joint Commission recently accredited Providence as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, one of only six such centers in the state.

Springhill Medical Center
Springhill, a 252-bed full-service hospital in Mobile offers a full range of health services to southwest Alabama. Surgical services include outpatient, inpatient, open heart and robotic surgery. The hospital is equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment. Springhill’s unique heart center offers state-of-the-art services all under one roof. And, the campus also is home to primary care physicians, a senior residence, sleep center, cancer center, athletic club, orthopedic surgery center, wound care and hyperbaric center and an emergency department staffed by all board-certified emergency medicine physicians. The hospital receives state and national recognition for outstanding quality.

AltaPointe Health Systems
AltaPointe Health Systems Inc. oversees a community-based, regional system of mental health, substance abuse and intellectual disability services in Mobile and Washington counties. It is Alabama’s largest regional community behavioral health provider.

In Mobile, AltaPointe operates facilities and psychiatric services for adults and children/adolescents. AltaPointe played a key role in assisting the state when Searcy State Psychiatric Hospital closed October 31, 2012. AltaPointe developed and put into place programs and services to assist with the transition, and some patients were admitted into AltaPointe facilities.
