BP money flowing soon to local governments

A federal judge says BP will begin paying up to $1 billion in settlements to compensate local governments across the Gulf Coast for lost tax revenue and other economic damages they blame on the company’s 2010 oil spill. An order issued Monday by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier said all of the payments to local governments must be made within 30 days. – AP/NOCB

MPT buying Capella Holdings for $900M

Real estate investment trust Medical Properties Trust Inc said it would buy privately held Capella Holdings Inc, owner of hospital operator Capella Healthcare Inc., for $900 million in cash. Birmingham, Alabama-based Medical Properties said the deal value will comprise of a $600 million investment in Capella's real estate and an investment of about $300 million in Capella's operating entities. – Reuters

AT&T purchase of DirecTV nears FCC approval

AT&T's $48.5 billion purchase of DirecTV is set to close after winning approval from the Federal Communications Commission. The Justice Department had already cleared the deal, which will create the largest provider of cable or satellite TV in the U.S., with 26.4 million cable and satellite TV subscribers. That's more than Comcast as well as a bigger Charter, which is seeking government approval to buy Time Warner Cable. – AP/AL.com

Feds allege falsified reports at nuclear plant

Federal investigators have accused two former contract employees for Xcel Energy Inc. of willfully violating procedures and falsifying reports about safety-related tests of casks filled with high-level nuclear waste stored at the Monticello nuclear power plant. AEgis co-founder Bill Waite dies at 68

AEgis Technologies of Huntsville will say goodbye this week to its co-founder, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer William "Bill" Waite. Waite, whose primary work focused on modeling and simulation, died Saturday at the age of 68.
