USS stock up with news of Fairfield being idled

U.S. Steel shares were up by 5.36% to $18.68 in early market trading on Wednesday, after the metal manufacturer announced plans to idle its Fairfield blast furnace. The company will idle the Alabama plant in mid-August as it looks to cut down on its raw material inventory, spokeswoman Country Boone said, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. – PBT/The Street

Details released on Bentley’s budget plan

Gov. Robert Bentley’s budget would level-fund most state agencies, remove earmarks from some state revenues and shift a major growth revenue source from the education budget into the General Fund. GDP rises 2.3 percent in 2Q; 1Q revised upward

The world’s largest economy expanded at a faster pace in the second quarter and managed to eke out a gain at the start of the year, painting a picture on incremental progress consistent with the Federal Reserve’s view. Gross domestic product rose at a 2.3 percent annualized rate, and a revised 0.6 percent advance in the first quarter wiped out a previously reported contraction, Commerce Department data showed Thursday in Washington. – Bloomberg

Plant to close, erasing 100 jobs in Attalla

Crown Columns and Millwork has issued a 60-day notice the company intends to close its Attalla facility. The move would send some 100 jobs from Etowah County to Troy, where parent company HB&G has its headquarters. Plant spokesman Lance Servais said the closing is part of an evolving company strategy after HB&G bought Crown a few weeks ago. The company had already consolidated its Etowah County operations and closed another location in east Gadsden. – WBRC

NASA visits Gulf Coast Exploreum Aug. 8

NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville and the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center, together will host “NASA Lands at the Exploreum Day” in Mobile on Saturday, Aug. 8. Visitors can talk with key managers from the Marshall Center, kids can make their own rocket while learning about space, take a virtual ride through the solar system and listen to Marshall engineers as they showcase their missions to explore the Earth, sun and other worlds. “NASA Lands at the Exploreum” will touch down at 10 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. – News release

Verizon expands XLTE service to Selma

Verizon Wireless has expanded its newest technology – known as XLTE – in Selma this week to boost 4G LTE network capacity and enhance high-speed services for customers. Today, more than 400 of Verizon’s 4G LTE 500-plus nationwide markets have been enhanced with added capacity (bandwidth) that is being delivered over the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network through activation of the service on the company’s additional AWS spectrum. – News release

Penske opens maintenance facility with CNG options

Penske Truck Leasing has opened a new facility in the Birmingham suburb of Alabaster, Ala., that offers maintenance for compressed natural gas vehicles, among other services.
