Who's moving up in Alabama business?

Scott Hammond has been promoted to partner in the Birmingham office of PwC US. His focus will be on the healthcare industry, where he has 16 years of experience.
Big Communications has promoted three staff members. Matt Harris has been named associate creative director. Merry Michael Smith has been promoted to associate media buyer and Shannon Harris has been promoted to senior art director.
The Alabama Farmers Federation has hired three summer interns to work on its staff. They are: Will Dodd, Katie Wendland and Josh Willis. Dodd works in the governmental affairs department. Wendland works in the communications department. Willis works in the governmental and agriculture programs department.
Airbus Americas has named Kit Johnson as its new customs manager for the A320 family assembly line in Mobile. Johnson comes to Airbus from John S. James Co. at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Inc. in Vance.
United Bank, of Atmore, has named Larry Strain its vice president and business banker. In this role, Strain will grow and maintain small business relationships across the bank’s southern markets.
Regions Financial Corp. stockholders have elected the following directors to one-year terms: George Bryan, Carolyn Byrd, David Cooper Sr., Don DeFosset, Eric Fast, O.B. Grayson Hall Jr., John Johns, Charles McCrary, James Malone, Ruth Ann Marshall, Susan Matlock, John Maupin Jr., John Roberts and Lee Styslinger III. In addition, directors Samuel Bartholomew Jr. and Earnest Deavenport Jr. have retired.
United Security Bancshares Inc. has announced the following individuals have been elected to its board of directors: Andrew Bearden Jr. as chairperson and John Gordon as vice chairperson. They also were elected to serve these same positions on First United Security Bank's board. First United is a banking subsidiary of United Security Bancshares.
Southern Research Institute CEO John Secrist has announced his retirement. A search to find his replacement is underway. Secrist will retire once his replacement is found.
Transworld, a statewide business advisory company, has hired Sam Dennis as an advisor in Mobile and Thomas Walton as an advisor in the Birmingham region. In addition, the firm has hired Phillip Moore as an advisor in North Alabama.
Samford University’s Brock School of Business named alumnus Vicki Briggs, executive vice president and COO of St. Vincent’s Health System, its Alumnus of the Year. In addition, the school presented the following faculty awards for 2013: Sara Helms – Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award; Jim Reburn – Graduate Excellence in Teaching Award; Franz Lohrke – Outstanding Scholarship Award and Darin White – Outstanding Service Award.
Zestian Simmons, a teacher at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School in Montgomery, was named the AP English Teacher of the Year by the National Math and Science Initiative.
Alabama A&M University has hired Carlton Wright as its new band director. Wright returns to his alma mater with the experience of having served as band director at a number of schools in the Birmingham area. In addition, AAMU's head athletics trainer, Jessie Zucnick-Kimbugwae has won the Alabama Athletic Trainers Association Collegiate Athletic Trainer of the Year award.
Nicholas Giordano has been named dean of the Auburn University College of Science and Mathematics. Giordano comes to Auburn from Purdue University, where he most recently served as head of the department of physics.
Auburn University Montgomery political science Professor Kalu N. Kalu has been awarded a J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In addition, AUM has named Sheila Austin as dean of the School of Education. She previously served as associate dean of education and professor and head of the AUM department of counselor, leadership and special education.
Golf Academy of America has hired Kendricke Waldon as a regional field military relationships specialist.
Volkert Inc., of Mobile, has named Jerry Stump, PE its corporate chief operations officer. Stump has 30 years of experience.
Magnolia River, an infrastructure and geospatial solutions company, has named Heath McCleskey its chief financial officer. In addition, the company has added Darrell Hand as program director for pipeline services and Sidney Thomas as area director for pipeline services.
Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon Inc. has named Carrie Stokes, PE, PMP, CHMM its new director of energy and environment. Stokes has been with the firm full time since 1997. The firm has hired Cendy Dodd, CPA as its chief financial officer. Dodd has 27 years of finance experience. In addition, the firm has hired Paul Dougherty as its chief technology officer. Dougherty brings 34 years’ experience to the firm.
Larry Gibson and Lyman Ramsay were both re-elected to the board of directors of Alabama Ag Credit. In addition, James Bassett was named chairman of the board. The financing company operates nine offices in Alabama.
Intergraph Government Solutions, a subsidiary of Intergraph Corp., has hired Brad Ward as senior vice president of geospatial solutions.
ProAssurance Corp. shareholders re-elected three board members, William Listwan, John McMahon Jr. and W. Stancil Starnes, each to three-year terms ending in 2016.
Frank Fogarty has been named vice president for trade and development of the Alabama State Port Authority. Fogarty has 38 years of experience in domestic and international trade.
Baker Donelson has named Bill Bensinger a new shareholder in the firm's Birmingham office. Bensinger is a member of the firm's Financial Institutions Advocacy Group. In addition, the firm has added Ashley Hugunine as an associate in the firm's Real Estate and Finance Group.
ASF Logistics, of Mobile, has named Hanney Seylim as national development manager for ASF Australia Pty Ltd., the company's recently opened Australian enterprise in partnership with ADM Global Pty Ltd.
Thomas Freeley has joined Associa's McKay Management Corp. Inc., in Birmingham, as CEO and president. Freeley has more than 20 years’ experience in the association management industry.
ExpoDisplays hired Justin Wilcox as the new research and development manager. He has five years of experience in the tradeshow industry.
Decatur-based Red Sage Communications Inc.’s founder and president, Ellen Didier, has been named the 2013 Alabama Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. In addition, the firm’s marketing coordinator, Heather Thompson, has been named the Arthur Orr Young Professional of the Year by the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce.
Birmingham dermatologic surgeon Dr. Gary Monheit has been named to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery’s Visiting Professor lecture series. Monheit practices with Total Skin & Beauty.
Citizens Baptist Medical Center has named Ann McEntire as the hospital's chief nursing officer. Previously, she worked at Princeton Baptist Medical Center.
Premier Medical Eye Group expanded to include a new optometrist, Melissa Hoercher. She will serve patients at Infirmary Eastern Shore and Thomas Hospital.
Stuart Obermann has been named the executive director of the Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County board of directors. Obermann replaces Lynne Berry, who stepped down in June.
The board of directors of Alabama Lions Sight Conservation Association has named W. Durden Dean as its new executive director. Prior to his appointment, he served as development director for the Habitat for Humanity's Montgomery location and executive director for the South East YWCA in Montgomery.
The Birmingham office of The Shopping Center Group has added Jenny Palmer as manager of client services. Palmer has 17 years of real estate experience.
Larry Blumberg and Associates has named Barry Barnhart as vice president, restaurant operations, a new company position. Barnhart has been in the restaurant business for 43 years, which will help him lead the company's efforts to build and open new Del Taco restaurants throughout Alabama and northern Florida.

Daniel Parker, a garbage truck driver for Republic Services Inc. in Birmingham, has been named Driver of the Year in the large industrial category by the Environmental Industry Associations. Parker has a 33-year clean driving record with Republic, driving an average of 1,500 miles per week.
