A month of achievements in local business

The Forum, an event organized by Auburn University at Montgomery’s School of Business and the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, was recently highlighted as one of the top economic events in the world by Venture Capital Post. The Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries recently celebrated its 130th anniversary. It was established by legislative act on February 23, 1883.

The Alabama Departments of Mental Health and Rehabilitation Services and the City of Vestavia Hills were both recognized for increasing efficiency and responsiveness by the Center for Government and Public Affairs at Auburn University at Montgomery. The state department was honored for Project Search, which trains young people with disabilities for employment. Vestavia Hills was honored for its E-911 Procurement project, in which the city contracted with Shelby County 911 to cover its emergency communication services at about half the previous cost.

Baptist Health System’s Worksite Wellness Initiative has been selected as a 2013 HealthCare Consumerism Superstar by the Institute for HealthCare Consumerism. Launched as a way to curb health care costs for its own 4,800 employees, the wellness program has been offered to other employers in Jefferson, Shelby, Walker and Talladega counties since 2008.

George Moore, historian of the Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa, has been honored as the Historic Hotels of America ambassador of the year. In addition, the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club & Spa, in Point Clear, was awarded the 2013 Best Historic Hotel (over 400 guest rooms) award.

Brasfield & Gorrie has received an Award of Excellence and the Project of the Year award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of North Alabama. The awards were for the company’s work on the Raytheon Redstone Missile Integration Facility in Huntsville.

DailyAccess Corp. has been cited as a Best in Class retirement plan services provider in the less than $5 million and $5 million to $25 million market segments by Plansponsor magazine.

DeRamus Hearing Centers has been named the 2013 Employer of the Year by Easter Seals Central Alabama. DeRamus has locations in Montgomery, Opelika, Clanton and Selma.

SCA, which employs 500 people in Barton, has been recognized by WWF for its leadership in transparency for disclosing its ecological footprint in the WWF Environmental Paper Company Index 2013. SCA reported that its tissue product category comes from 44 production sites around the world.

Wells Insight, a cloud based SCADA management company based in Birmingham (pictured right), has won the grand prize at this year's Verizon Wireless Technology Innovation Awards. 

For a sixth consecutive year, Barfield, Murphy, Shank & Smith LLC was named one of the Best Accounting Firms to Work For in the U.S. by Accounting Today magazine. It was the only firm in
Alabama to make the listing.

Brasfield & Gorrie received three first-place Eagle Awards, the Carolinas Green Award, the Free Enterprise Award and the Project of the Year award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas.

Camber Corp., of Huntsville, received two Serious Gaming Awards at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference in December. Camber won 2013's Best Mobile Game Award and the People's Choice Award for their GORRDEE learner centric game, which is a mobile application the Army uses for training on the Unmanned Aerial System Shadow platform.

Law firm Constangy, Brooks & Smith LLP has earned three national Tier 1 rankings in the 2014 Best Lawyers Best Law Firms publication. The honor came in the categories of Employment Law-Management; Labor Law-Management and Litigation-Labor & Employment.

Maynard, Cooper & Gale PC has been named a 2014 BTI Client Service A-Team. This is the sixth year the law firm has been included on the listing, which surveys companies about their firms' services. In addition, Maynard Cooper was selected as "Go-To Law Firm" for Fortune 500 Companies by American Lawyer Media. The firm was nominated by 20 different companies.

Warren Averett LLC, a certified public accountant and advisor firm, has been named the LEA Global's 2013 Innovative Firm of the Year. The LEA Global is the second largest international association focused on accounting, financial and business advisory services.
