Wilcox County No. 15 on "Poorest Counties in America" List
According to the most recent Census Bureau data, Wilcox County ranked among the top 15 counties with the nation's highest poverty rates.
Nearly half of the list was comprised of Southern counties, the region of the U.S. where the unemployment rate is higher than the national average, at more than 9 percent.
The median annual income of residents in Wilcox, located between Mobile and Montgomery, is less than half of the national median income. Additionally, the county's high school graduation rate ranks lower than the state of Alabama's average.
