Birmingham’s U.S. steel deal: Naughty or nice?

Southern Museum of Flight Executive Director Brian Barsanti said he reached out to U.S. Steel when a feasibility study showed a parcel the company owned near Barber Motorsports would be an ideal location for his museum to expand. The 24-acre site was later donated to the city of Birmingham by U.S. Steel through a development agreement with the city. The city agreed to pay up to $4.6 million for some site work to prepare 40 acres south of Barber Motorsports Park owned by U.S. Steel for a high-tech industrial park. – AL.com

New $49.5M expansion approved at Port of Mobile

The Alabama State Port Authority and APM Terminals boards of directors in separate actions have approved a $49.5 million expansion of the container facility at the Port of Mobile. The new expansion includes a dock extension and an additional 20 acres of improved yard to maintain excess capacity. “Container intermodal growth continues to drive investment at the Port of Mobile,” said James K. Lyons, chief executive of the Alabama State Port Authority. – American Journal of Transportation

Alabama Power scores highest in JD Power survey

Electric utilities achieved a record-high in satisfaction scores and showed a major turnover at the top in JD Power’s latest annual survey ranking business customers. The 19th annual survey produced an overall record average of 765 points (on a 1,000-scale). It is the fifth straight increase and a 10-point leap over last year’s average. Alabama Power scored highest among all electric utilities at 819 points, moving it to first among south large segment utilities after finishing two places behind leader Georgia Power last year in the business customer survey. – ELP

Steve Feaga joins Balch & Bingham as compliance officer

Steve Feaga, former chief of the Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama, will join Balch & Bingham as the firm’s first chief compliance officer. He will lead Balch’s compliance management program, ensuring adherence with applicable laws, rules and regulations, and overseeing training and compliance across the firm. Additionally, Feaga will lead Balch’s Investigations and White-Collar Defense Practice. – News release

Kevin Elko to speak at AGC annual luncheon in Mobile

The Mobile and Northwest Florida section of Associated General Contractors (AGC) Alabama says renowned motivational speaker and author Dr. Kevin Elko will deliver the keynote address during its 2018 Annual Luncheon. Elko focuses a substantial portion of his time helping organizations in the areas of leadership, goal setting and myriad other motivational topics. The event begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the Country Club of Mobile. – News release
