O’Neal Manufacturing to consolidate operations

O'Neal Manufacturing Services is consolidating its Birmingham operations where about 180 people work. Some of those employees may be moved to other OMS facilities elsewhere, or in other jobs at O'Neal Steel in Birmingham. But many will lose their jobs. – AL.com

Four companies win $190K in Launchpad prizes

Four firms from north Alabama took home $190,000 in prizes Thursday night during the Alabama Launchpad Competition Finale in Huntsville. A panel of five judges presented a $100,000 check to Huntsville-based Vital Metrix, a startup that has developed a heart monitor that provides data to cardiologists while patients are home, allowing for better treatment of congestive heart failure. – AL.com

Shelton State gets auto worker training grant

One west Alabama community college will receive grant money that will help it feed the state's growing automotive sector. Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa will receive a $368,266 Appalachian Regional Commission grant to help workers qualify for careers in the automotive manufacturing industry. – BizJournals.com

Grants announced to improve state parks

Buck’s Pocket State Park may soon become a destination for enthusiasts of all-terrain vehicles thanks to a $526,996 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley. Funds will be used to construct a 15- to 25-mile-long trail for off-highway vehicles at the park located along a section of Sand Mountain that straddles the borders of Jackson, DeKalb and Marshall counties. – News release

Alabama does well in builder scorecard

Alabama is an excellent place for contractors to do business, according to a scorecard launched by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). “Building America: The Merit Shop Scorecard” reviews and grades state-specific information significant to the success of the commercial and industrial construction industry. – News release
