Alabama Power moves for higher rates

Alabama Power Company filed Monday for a rate increase that will cost the typical residential customer $6.78 a month starting Jan. 1. The 4.9 percent increase is to cover increased costs, the company says. A little less than one third of the increased costs are from upgrades to coal fired power plants to meet environmental regulations. – AL.com

Quick ruling sought on Accountability Act

The Republican leaders of the Alabama Legislature are asking the state Supreme Court to make a quick decision on the fate of the Alabama Accountability Act. Chevron taps new Gulf fields

Chevron Corp has begun producing oil and natural gas from a massive field in the Gulf of Mexico, the company said Tuesday. Among the largest in the region, the Jack and St. Malo fields are in 7,000 feet of water in an area beneath the Gulf known as the Walker Ridge, approximately 280 miles south of New Orleans. – AL.com

Business execs push for 4K expansion

A group led by some of Alabama's top business executives is pushing for another expansion of the state's voluntary pre-kindergarten program and is trying to make it accessible to 17 percent of the eligible 4-year-olds. The co-chairmen of the Pre-K Task Force of the Alabama School Readiness Alliance announced Tuesday that it will ask the Legislature to increase the allocation by $13.2 million for a total of $51.7 million for the next school year. – AP/Myrtle Beach Online

ASF Intermodal opens 3rd Texas facility

Mobile-based ASF Intermodal has opened an intermodal drayage facility in Fort Worth, Texas. It's the firm's third such facility in the state, joining locations in Houston and Dallas. Austal USA aluminum welder Wayne Alexander stood beside Alma Booterbaugh Tuesday, wielding her initials into the metal hull of a Joint High Speed Vessel being built in Mobile. Booterbaugh is the recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, three Navy Superior Civilian Service awards and the sponsor of the navy vessel which is named for Brunswick, Georgia. – Fox 10
