BJCC bond sale closes, generates $313 million for stadium, arena renovations

The bond sale to finance the construction of the downtown Birmingham stadium and expansion of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex closed on Tuesday. The "highly successful" bond sale generated $313 million in proceeds for the building of the $175 million stadium and $125 million renovation of Legacy Arena, said Tad Snider, BJCC president and chief executive officer. – AL.com

ProAssurance beats Wall Street expectations for 2Q

ProAssurance Corp. (PRA) on Tuesday reported second-quarter profit of $28.4 million. The Birmingham-based company said it had profit of 53 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 48 cents per share. The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. – AP

Corona Group announces $2 million expansion in Birmingham

A Birmingham company that produces ergonomic furniture for workplaces says its $2 million expansion will create at least eight new jobs. The Corona Group announced its plans to expand Tuesday. The company says it'll purchase and renovate a roughly 55,000-square-foot building for its new manufacturing, distribution and office operations. – AP

Trump’s Space Force still has life in budget

President Trump's Space Force looked in jeopardy last month when Congress passed the 2019 budget bills with no money for the new military branch, but U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) said then supporters shouldn't worry. As more details leak out this week about the Washington battle over the new force, Pentagon media specialists are now suggesting the force may yet be with us, after all. – AL.com

Alexander City's Russell Medical begins layoffs

The Alexander City Outlook is reporting that Russell Medical will lay off some of its employees to cope with financial issues. The number of employees affected was not disclosed, but it spans all departments and pay grades, officials said. Russell Medical employs about 500. However, Susan Foy, director of marketing, told the paper that the hospital wants "to be here a long time." – AL.com

Long national nightmare over: Dixie beer is back

Dixie Beer is back, and in a big way. The century-old New Orleans company, bought last year by Saints owner Tom Benson and now led by his widow, Gayle Benson, unveiled plans Tuesday to open an 80,000-square-foot brewery and restaurant in New Orleans East. Backers hope the project will not only help revive the historic brand but also help revive a hard-hit neighborhood. – The Advocate
