Alabama’s good news reverberates on West Coast

Another U.S. manufacturer is leaving high-cost California and moving to the South, a region whose cheaper labor and lower taxes have lately helped it become an industrial hub. Aerojet-Rocketdyne is leaving Sacramento, a longtime hub of the aerospace industry. The defense and aerospace company announced Monday it is closing its Rancho Cordova manufacturing plant by 2019 and eliminating or moving nearly 1,100 jobs, with Alabama potentially getting 800. – CBS

Governor accepts resignation of Jon Mason

Gov. Kay Ivey Tuesday accepted the resignation of Jon Mason, former Gov. Robert Bentley’s director of faith-based services and husband of Rebekah Mason, whose alleged affair with Bentley brought down his administration. State experiments with selfies as part of tax filing

MorphoTrust USA has partnered with the Alabama Department of Revenue to launch a new pilot program using MorphoTrust’s electronic ID (eID) to enhance security for residents filing state tax refunds during the 2016 filing season. Taxpayers who use the MorphoTrust eID to complete the filing process will receive priority processing and expedite their state tax refund. – Yahoo Finance

Plan to hike gas tax moves through committee

A House committee Tuesday approved a bill that would raise the state’s gas tax to help generate money for roads and bridge improvement. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Bill Poole, R-Tuscaloosa, goes to the full House for consideration after a public hearing that featured no real opposition but did bring concerns from groups representing Alabama cities who want to change the distribution of money. – Montgomery Advertiser

Rives Construction to build new Saban-Agresti Mercedes dealership

A new Irondale Mercedes-Benz dealership led by University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban and Joe Agresti is set to begin construction this month. The project is scheduled to finish by mid-2018. The team recently selected Rives Construction Company as the contractor. The Birmingham firm has built many car dealerships, including Irondale's own Audi and Mini Cooper stores. – AL.com

Latest thing: Chewing gum that could detect cancer

It isn't your normal Juicy Fruit gum you'd find in a convenience store. But, Katherine Bazemore, president of Volatile Analysis, told WAAY 31 her gum, which she isn't ready to show off yet, would do more than just put a nice taste in your mouth. It could detect the kind of cancer someone may have. "We really believe this gum can be that vehicle," Bazemore said. – WAAY

CFD Research wins $36.5M Torch contract

CFD Research Corp. has been awarded a five-year, $36.5M contract as a direct award as part of Torch Technologies’ AMCOM EXPRESS Blanket Purchase Agreement. This task order contract provides engineering services to the Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) Systems Simulation, Software and Integration (S3I) Directorate supporting technology development for energy storage systems and electronic systems validation. – News release
