Laclede buying Alagasco for $1.34B

Laclede Group today said it agreed to buy Alabama Gas Corp. from Energen Corp. for $1.34 billion as it expands beyond its home state of Missouri. Alabama Gas, or Alagasco, is the biggest natural gas utility in Alabama. – Wall Street Journal

Hillshire Brands cuts 1,100 jobs in Florence

Hillshire Brands Co. said Friday it will stop production at its Florence facility, resulting in about 1,100 job cuts. The company said the facility, which houses breakfast sandwich and sausage cooking operations, "will not allow the company to meet its efficiency or long-term profitability expectations." – Wall Street Journal
